Find out about 4 fantastic outdoor activity holidays in Granada

by Jun 22, 2021Andalucía, La Alpujarra

One thing this pandemic has taught us is to use our future free time well and to treasure each and every moment. Planning our next breakaway has become more like planning a breakout, and many of us long for great gasps of fresh air in our first ‘post-COVID 19’ holiday. We are also thinking more seriously about responsible travel and helping to rebuild the vital tourist economies of the destinations that we visit.

If that’s you, then take a look at Granada – a fantastic destination with many outdoor activities on offer. Come and fill your lungs with some fresh, clean Andalucían air!  You will be welcomed with open arms, particularly by local businesses and tour providers.

The Green List

They say that green is the colour of envy, and at the time of writing Spain is pretty envious of other countries that made it onto the Green List for travellers from the UK, announced on May 17th. The current status is Amber, meaning travellers to Spain will still need to self-isolate for 10 days on their arrival back in the UK, as well as take a PCR test. Although it is possible, however, that the government may ease up on the quarantine restrictions for those travellers who have been double vaccinated.

While we wait for good news from the UK government about the travel traffic light system, Spain continues to hold the door open for UK visitors this summer.  The news came last month from the Spanish Government that from 24 May UK visitors will not be subject to coronavirus restrictions when travelling to Spain, including the requirement to present a negative PCR test on arrival.

Why Granada is the perfect post-lockdown destination

Spain is a relatively safe destination and as of 26th June mandatory face mask wearing outside is being eased meaning that hill walking, mountain sports and other outdoor activitities just require social distancing and common sense.

Granada is a favoured destination-in-the-planning for those who crave some warmth and sunshine after the strictures of lock-down and the inclement British spring, but who don’t fancy the crowds of the Costa del Sol.

The city is vibrant and bohemian, with plenty to do, shopping, eating out and nightlife, but additionally is surrounded by spectacular countryside. Granada is close enough to the coastline of the Costa Tropical to warrant a day on the beach, but the countryside in between is made for exploration, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to pique your interest.

Horse Riding in the Alpujarras

Getting back in the saddle of travel and adventure doesn’t come any better than a spot of horse-riding in the wild and wonderful Alpujarra mountains of Andalucia, with Caballo Blanco.

A short drive along meandering roads from Granada city will take you to the top of the world with the sweetest air, near Orgiva, in Granada province, where you can swap your four wheels for four hooves.

You can opt for a day ride, or choose from 3, 4 or 7 day horse trekking holidays where you can explore old Moorish mule paths and stunning deep valleys filled with sunshine and history.

It’s the perfect slow way to see rural Spain and to have the chance to experience real-life and immerse yourself in local culture, a million miles away from the touristy Costas and lock-down Britain. Trample wild herbs underfoot, or under hoof to be precise, on a holiday that will act as the perfect antidote to all the madness of the past months.

Kiersten Hartley, Spanish Highs

“This has been a hard time for everyone, including the travel sector. But we haven’t been standing idle. We are all mountain lovers at heart and the enforced absence of clients has allowed us mountain guides to meet up on weekly basis to re-engage with old favourite hikes and discover new horizons and adventures. This will be reflected in new itineraries in the near future.  We really would appreciate your business as soon as you feel it is safe and possible to travel.
